In 2023, 259,200 school-leavers obtained university entrance qualifications. 55% of them were women and 45% men. This education gender gap reverses the lower the school-leaving qualification. Young men are in the majority then
- Of the 130,300 graduates with a first school-leaving certificate, 59% were men and only 41% were women. The first school-leaving certificate is a general qualification at lower secondary level, which can usually be obtained at the end of year 9.
- More young men (51%) than young women (49%) also obtained an intermediate school-leaving certificate. Around 336,400 graduates left general education schools in 2023 with a Mittlerer Schulabschluss, which can usually be obtained at the end of year 10 at lower secondary level.
- Women are also in the majority among university graduates at 53% compared to 47%. They are more likely to obtain a Bachelor's degree (53%) or a Master's degree (51%). Only in the case of doctorates do men make up the majority (53%).


In the individual subject areas, women are also represented in higher numbers than men among graduates – with the exception of engineering (74% men) and sport (54% men).
But the majority of graduates in the more popular legal, economic and social sciences (60%) or natural sciences including mathematics (53%) were women.
In 2023, women accounted for a particularly large share of graduates in the arts (74%) and in the disciplines of human medicine/health sciences (69%).
