Exterior view of Luisen-Gymnasium

Luisen-Gymnasium Düsseldorf, Germany

A new chapter is now beginning for the Luisen-Gymnasium: with its move to Völklinger Straße, the Luisen-Gymnasium is gaining a new home that combines modern teaching methods with contemporary architecture and sustainability.

The new building, covering around 13,750 square metres, has been designed as a cluster school. Several classes share common learning and communal areas. The planned cost of the new Luisen-Gymnasium amounts to around 106.5 million euros. The move also marks the start of the school’s transition to an all-day programme.

One notable feature is that Queen Silvia of Sweden is a former pupil; she took her A-levels at the Luisen-Gymnasium in 1963 and will be present at the opening of the new building on 15 October 2026.

The new building will also bring about a change in the way learning takes place: there will be a greater focus on self-organised and collaborative working. Corridors will be transformed into communal and study areas. Learning studios will provide space for concentrated and individual working. Science laboratories will support experimental learning.
The furniture supplied by VS supports this flexible learning culture. Products such as PantoSwing-LuPo and Shift+ Landscape will be used to facilitate a variety of teaching situations.

The new grammar school also offers a wide range of opportunities outside the traditional learning spaces: the canteen, assembly hall and self-study centre complement the versatile learning areas. The triple-purpose sports hall, with a grandstand for up to 700 spectators, provides space for school and club sports.

In 1963, Queen Silvia of Sweden took her A-levels at the Luisen-Gymnasium. She therefore travelled to the Rhine in October 2026 for the opening of the new school building.
