An immersive learning space for everyone

On 3 March 2026, the Kathinka Platzhoff Foundation opened an immersive learning space that is unique in Germany: it is called ‘Kathinka's Virtual World’ and is located in the Hanau Cultural Forum. Here, all visitors can embark on virtual learning journeys. The foundation was supported in this project by Google Germany and the city of Hanau. At VS, the learning space runs under the name miri.
How does plastic waste from the Kinzig river end up in the North Sea and what damage does it cause there? Answers to such questions are provided by Kari, a little seal. As a digital companion, she guides primary school children through the walk-in high-tech cube, which is equipped with microphones, cameras and projection technology. Children's hands flit across the walls, the system reacts to touch, and content opens and closes. Modern interaction technology makes abstract knowledge tangible and experiential.
The learning space is designed so that it can be used without instruction. Although children and young people are the primary target group, it is open to all visitors to the Kulturforum. The foundation also plans to offer guided tours for school classes and other learning groups.
